Interning at The DECK: Matthew Nguyen
Introduction
Hello everyone, my name is Matthew Nguyen. I am a third-year student at George Mason University studying Computer Science focusing on the machine learning and artificial intelligence field and minoring in data analysis. I am from Manassas, Virginia, right beneath Washington D.C. I have always dreamed of visiting Japan and I am excited to work as an intern at The DECK for 9 weeks!

My Major
I chose to major in Computer Science because I’ve always been interested in how a computer works and how programs could run on such tiny devices. My hobby of computer games and building computers further pushed me to learn more about the topic. This interest has led me down a rabbit hole to learn the science behind computers.

Experience
As I learn more about the process of data mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, I hope to create meaningful projects that might help my community back in the states and even globally like Japan! As of now however, I have created a few projects during Hackathons. Using OpenCV and Google’s Mediapipe, I led a team to create a supplemental learning device for young students to practice and bring awareness to American sign language.

Japan
Japan has always been a location I’ve always wanted to visit as a kid. From watching anime and playing Nintendo games to learning about the history and the efficiency in Japanese life. Walking into a ramen shop where you are sitting face to face with the chef was one of the many experiences I’ve always wanted to try in Japan. In Osaka especially, I’ve heard that the people are very kind and open minded which led me to choose to work in Osaka.

Conclusion
At this internship at The DECK, I hope to gain valuable skills to pursue a career in developing artificial intelligence and research machine learning applications in business.
